The first one of the year

The cactus wren, whose nest is on the porch, was sounding alarm, and understandably so: snake close by, snake close by.

It was not a rattlesnake, only a harmless (to us) bull snake, but not so harmless when you have eggs to protect. He was gently relocated to a place with a lower nest density.

Glad you know one snake from another and could tell it was not poisonous. There's a Ribbon Garter who spends a lot of time in my compost pile. We have learned to co-exist and I no longer jump when he comes slithering out of the pile! And glad you were able to help the wren protect her nest.
